Travel Summary Summary (From: Reis Van Venetie Journal)
At the age of 23 (1620), Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) made the most beautiful journey from his life. From The Hague he pulled with a state envoy to the mighty republic of Venice. On his way in Germany he saw cities like Cologne, Heidelberg and Tübingen. Switzerland offered him the Rhine Falls of Schaffhausen, views of the lakes, and hardships on top of the Alps. In Italy he admired the ancient architecture of Verona's Arena and the classicism of Palladio in Vicenza. Venice offered him a selection of sights for three weeks: the Arsenal, San Marco, the Palace of the Procurities, the Sansovino Library. Enchanted he listened to Claudio Monteverdi, he snuggled around in art collections and saw the Murano glass blowers. He also took part in the public showing the envoy from the Netherlands. Per gondola, on the side of the senators of the lagoon town, he conducted loudly applauds and trumpet scales throughout the city. He visited the Senate, attended the Harangues of the State Ambassador Van Aerssen, and spoke himself in Italian with the Doge of Venice.
